The doctor bag, sometimes called a gladstone, is the oldest shape we sell: a hinged frame that opens wide and stands up on its own. Tuscany Leather builds them in full-grain vegetable-tanned hide over a rigid structure, which is why they hold their shape for decades rather than slumping like a soft holdall.
9 pieces in this range, 9 in stock now, from A$479 — genuine Tuscany Leather, delivered across Australia in {DELIVERY_PROMISE}.
Carrying a laptop rather than instruments? A structured leather briefcase protects a machine better than a framed bag. For the same hide in a softer shape, see the men's leather bags and the women's leather bags.
A doctor bag is a framed bag with a hinged mouth that opens wide and holds itself open, so the whole interior is visible at once. It takes its name from the physicians' bags of the nineteenth century, and the same shape is also sold as a gladstone bag. Tuscany Bags sells them in genuine Tuscany Leather, handmade in Florence.
Very little, and the two names are used interchangeably for the same shape. A gladstone is traditionally the slightly larger, deeper version built over a rigid frame, while doctor bag describes the same construction at a size meant to be carried daily. Both are in this range.
They are genuine framed leather bags rather than clinical equipment: they carry well, open wide and are easy to see into, but they are not sterile, waterproof or fitted with medical inserts. Many buyers are clinicians and many are not — the shape is bought as much for how it looks as for what it was designed to hold.
A framed bag uses more hide and far more hand-work than a soft one. The frame has to be built, the leather worked over it without creasing, and the mouth and hinge finished by hand. In this range that puts them at the upper end of the catalogue, and it is also why they keep their shape for years rather than collapsing.
