Florence, where leather was perfected
From the tanneries along the Arno to the guilds that set the standard for Europe, Florence built its name on leather. After the war, the Scuola del Cuoio, the Leather School, was founded behind the basilica of Santa Croce to pass the craft to a new generation. Its workshops still run today. This is the lineage Tuscany Leather works within, and the one we bring to Australia and New Zealand.
Vegetable-tanned, not chemically rushed
Most cheap leather is chrome-tanned in a day with chemicals. Ours is vegetable-tanned the slow way, with natural tannins from bark and plants over several weeks. It starts firm and a little formal, then softens to your hand, deepens in colour and takes on a patina no two owners share. How to tell genuine full-grain leather
Genuine full-grain shows the hide’s natural grain and the odd small mark, not a uniform printed pattern. It smells of leather, not plastic. Its edges are burnished and sealed rather than coated in painted plastic. And crucially, it ages: it patinas and softens, where bonded or coated “genuine leather” cracks and peels. Care & patina
Keep it dry, wipe spills promptly, and condition the leather occasionally with a suitable balm. Avoid leaving it in direct sun or heat for long periods. Beyond that, simply use it, the marks of a life carried are the point, not a problem.
